If you want a big life-changing thing to do, here it is; forget your birthday. Yes, that's right, just forget your birthday! For some reason we celerbrate the day we popped into this world. We do this every year and at first it is usually fun. If we are lucky we get presents and cards... not everyone, it's easy to generalise here. But the day of our birth is celerbrated and we start to identify ourselves with it.
I'm Roger Warner. I'm 8 and a 1/2. Then I'm Roger Warner. I'm 9 years old.
Then a teenager... in my 20's... 30's and... suddenly it is not so much fun.
Instead of looking forward to it we see how fast it goes and if we are not really careful we start looking back!
We start believing our age and, even worse, we start acting it! We wear beige. We start believing it.
How many times have you heard someone say... I would love to do this or that but I'm a bit old now. Bollocks! If you think you are, you are. The reverse is the same. True, if you start learning the trombone at eighty you probably won't have as many years to annoy the neighbours but you can still have lots of fun.
As of writting this the oldest person alive is 114, that's 34 years in which to really piss off your neighbours with your trombone expertise.
So, scrap your bithday, be as old as you want and do all those things you want to do. Buy a skate board. Ride a Harley. Have fun. You're only as old as you think you are!
